We are delighted to announce that Huda Mohamed MBE has been shortlisted for the 2024 Parliamentary Award’s Nursing and Midwifery Award. She will join other shortlisted health and care staff at a celebratory award event on Monday 14 October.

The NHS Parliamentary Awards were created in 2018 to celebrate and recognise the outstanding contribution of staff, volunteers and others working in the health and care sector. In the first stage of the awards, MPs nominate healthcare teams and individuals in their local area to highlight their exceptional commitment and achievements working in and with the NHS.

Huda has been the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) specialist lead midwife at Whittington Health NHS Trust since 2016, and in 2024 was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) medal for services to midwifery.

Midwives are often the first people to discover that a woman has been subjected to the practice of FGM, which increases the risks for a pregnancy. As Huda was born in one of the countries where FGM is still carried out, and is fluent in two community languages, she has been in a unique position to support victims.

Beyond her role as a midwife, she has taken on responsibility for raising awareness, providing extensive training for Whittington Health’s nurses, midwives and medical staff on current policies and guidelines as well as ways to navigate complex and sensitive situations. She has seen over 100 women with FGM, many of whom are vulnerable and have experienced deprivation, including asylum seekers and refugees.

She works with local communities, offering support to women and their families, Councils and those involved in safeguarding, and other partners. She has worked with several organisations and systems over the years, including NHS Digital (helping them to develop the new national information sharing system [FGM-IS]), the Royal College of Midwives’ FGM Specialist Network e-platform, and has recently contributed to the End FGM Canada Network.

She also volunteers extensively with Vavengers, the charity committed to ending FGM.

Going forward to the final round of the awards is a particular achievement this year, with 318 MPs across England putting forward 918 nominations – a far greater number than in any previous year.

A panel of national judges – made up of notable figures across the healthcare sector – will now come together to select the winners of this year’s awards. These winners will be announced at the awards ceremony taking place on Monday 14 October 2024 – when healthcare leaders, finalists and MPs will come together to celebrate the immense contribution which healthcare staff make to the NHS.

You can read about what has inspired Huda to support survivors of FGM and campaign against its continued practice in our web story about her MBE award.
