The nephrology department provides diagnosis and treatment for patients with all forms of acute and chronic kidney disease (excluding dialysis and transplantation) together with the investigation and management of hypertension. There is particular clinical interest in diabetic nephropathy, resistant hypertension and renal disease associated with malignancy and haematological diseases (particularly sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and myeloma).

Investigations includes a full range of blood and urine investigations, renal imaging (ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CT and MRI) and diagnostic renal biopsy where required. We work closely with the hospital’s diabetes, cardiology and haematology departments and provide a daily inpatient consult service.

Although dialysis and transplantation are not available at the Whittington Hospital, the renal unit at the nearby Royal Free Hospital provides these services. The management of outpatients with advanced renal disease who do not immediately require replacement therapy is managed jointly between the two departments. Both Dr Harber and Dr Woolfson work at the Royal Free Hospital and within the North Central London Renal Network and this strong link facilitates investigation and management of patients.
