How to get treatment

The district nursing service is available to adults over the age of 16 living in Haringey or Islington who are unable to leave their home to receive care.

Your GP or healthcare professional may refer you to the district nursing service, or you can refer yourself or someone you care for by phoning our messaging service on 020 7288 3555.

First visit

Your first visit from the district nursing team will last up to 60 minutes. During this time you will receive a full assessment from one of our community staff nurses.

This assessment can cover:
  • Taking your temperature, pulse, blood sugar and a urine sample
  • Taking a brief medical history
  • Finding out about where you live and who you live with
  • Talking about your daily routine and activities
  • Identifying the activities you might need help with
  • Carrying out a pressure area risk assessment which can include examining your sacrum (the base of your spine), elbows and heels
  • Carrying out a malnutrition screen which can include questions about your height, weight, the impact of illness or medication on your appetite and any weight loss or gain you have experienced
  • Identifying any equipment you might need e.g. commode, urinal bottles, bed levers and cushions
  • Advice on healthy living
  • Discussing a visiting plan

Urgent advice

If you need to contact the district nursing service, or if you require urgent assistance from us before your next scheduled visit, you can contact us 24 hours a day using our messaging service on 020 7288 3555.
 
The telephone line will be answered by administration member of the team to esatblish the basic information and pass the details to the nursing team. Your call will then be passed to the nursing team. 
 
You will receive a call back from a member of the team who will provide you with advice over the phone or arrange a visit.

We aim to respond to enquiries within two hours, day and night.
