Is your project research?

When developing a project, it is important to communicate with the relevant teams in the Trust who can help develop and determine how a project should be defined and delivered.

There are broadly 4 different types of projects that can be delivered within the NHS:
  • Clinical Audit
  • Quality Improvement
  • Research
  • Service Evaluation

There are specific differences between each project type and there are specific governance requirements which need to be in place before starting a project.

If you think your project may be research or are not sure, contact the Research Support Team (whh-tr.researchsupport@nhs.net) or complete the short decision tool developed by the Health Research Authority (HRA) to help identify if your idea/ project would be considered research.

The table below provides a brief descriptive difference of the project types.

Note that projects can have multiple stages and may cross multiple project types over time. In these instances, it is important you seek support from the relevant staff in your Trust. Different types of projects can influence future work in other project areas. For example, a project may start as a Service Evaluation before then developing into a Research study or a Quality Improvement project.
