Hearing Support

Children and young people are placed in the Hearing Support Pathway (HSP) if they have permanent hearing difficulties in both ears that are considered moderate to severe or greater in severity.

They can also be seen here if their hearing loss is less severe but is likely to progress further in the future.

All types of permanent hearing loss are considered in the Hearing Support Pathway.

If there are other difficulties that have a greater impact on the child or young person’s communication skills then they will be placed on a more appropriate pathway and receive support from the HSP team.

A child or young person can be referred and will be seen by the HSP from 3 months to 18 years of age, and up to 25 years of age for young people who have an EHCP and require support to access education.

They will be seen by a Speech and Language Therapist and may also receive support from our trained Integrated Therapy Assistants.

Speech and Language Therapists in this pathway work closely with Teachers of the Deaf and Audiologists in the community. They also work closely with the tertiary/specialist team which include Speech & Language therapists, Teachers of the Deaf, Audiologists and Audio Vestibular consultants.
