FAQs

I am a course candidate (eILS, ePILS, NLS, ALS, APLS) and I have an appointment/meeting on the day of the course, would it be OK for me to step out and then join afterwards?

Generally speaking, attendance is required in ALL elements of our face-to-face courses stated above. This means that any element missed from the course will result in the candidate needing to attend the missed element at a later course date. This is needed in order to successfully complete the course, and the certificate will not be released until this is done.

I may be late to attend my resuscitation course (due to transport/childcare…). Since this is outside my control, could I still join the course?

For BLS/PBLS, there is a 5 minute waiting time for any latecomers. For ILS, because it is a longer course and less frequent, the waiting time is increased from 5 to 10 minutes. Anyone arriving later than this time, and regardless of the circumstances, will be asked to rebook the face-to-face session – but do not worry, we usually have many places available!. Our courses are very practical and time restricted, so we thank everyone for understanding this and contributing towards making it the best learning experience.

I missed my BLS session and have been recommended by resuscitation practitioners I could still make it if I come to a later session. Is this a guarantee that I will do my BLS today?

Unfortunately, if the sessions are fully booked, a place in BLS cannot be guaranteed without a prior booking confirmation. In order to achieve the best learning experience, the number of candidates for a group session is limited. We encourage you to attend if you missed your session. Should any other candidate fail to attend a later course, a space would be available for other people. Please mind that this is not always the case.

I have successfully completed an Advanced Life Support (ALS) course. My certificate is valid for 4 years. Do I need to do BLS before this time while working at the Whittington?

Completely! It is recommended that resuscitation skills (such as chest compressions) are practiced every year to avoid de-skilling. Any clinical member of staff needs to do a refresher every year. If you have just completed ALS or ILS, you do not need to do BLS that year.

I am on a one-day Advanced Life Support (eALS) or an Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) candidate. My credentials don’t seem to work on the webpage and the course is very soon. What should I do?

You should get in touch via email with us as soon as you notice a problem with your credentials. For the courses above, not completing the e-learning modules will result in a disadvantage during the face-to-face element of the course. This is because there is an expectation that skills have been learnt prior to attending the course and will be more difficult to pass if preparation has failed to take place. Also, in the APLS course, failure to do the modules before the course automatically means that you will not be able to obtain a certificate (even if you pass the assessed elements and complete the modules later).

I have sustained a new injury since I booked by resuscitation course and currently I can’t perform chest compressions. What should I do?

We recommend that you cancel your session and book another one when your injury has healed. If you have an injury that still allows you to be at work or have a permanent disability the resuscitation training courses can be adjusted to assess competency in different ways. This means that you can still be assessed providing clear and specific instructions to another candidate, for example, on how to perform chest compressions. In any case, resuscitation practitioners will contact your manager after the course to make them aware of the physical disability stopping you to demonstrate high quality chest compressions. This is to optimise patient safety by making sure accurate risk assessments have taken place at the workplace.

I have achieved Instructor Potential in my resuscitation course but have not heard yet from the Resuscitation Council UK (eILS, ePILS, NLS, ALS) or Advanced Life Support Group (APLS). What should I do?

Firstly, congratulations on being invited to teach with us in the future! It can take up to 6 weeks for professional bodies to process course returns and paperwork. If you haven’t heard from them after 6 weeks from the course date, get in touch with us and we will investigate further. Please, do not feel discouraged by a delay in this process, we would love for you to join us!

I requested my mentor in my advanced resuscitation course (ALS, NLS or APLS) to be considered for Instructor Potential. Unfortunately, I did not achieve this and feel disappointed. What can I do?

We are sorry to hear that you did not achieve an instructor potential (IP) nomination as you expected. Try getting in touch with the director of your course to receive tailored feedback for future courses. An Instructor Potential nomination is a unanimous faculty decision based on the assessment of skills observed in candidate’s performance during the course. Since the decision is made locally as a course provider centre, queries about IP will not be investigated by the professional body and are best resolved by communicating with the course and medical director.

I want to book as a candidate on the courses, how do I find out if there’s places?

Please send an email with the Subject: [course name & date] AVAILABILITY, to resus.whittington@nhs.net and we will endeavour to answer as soon as possible.

I haven’t received my manual, what do I do?

If your PDN has registered you on the course – they will have your manual. If not, please email Val on resus.whittington@nhs.net

I haven’t received an email or information about my upcoming course, what do I do?

You need to make sure you have logged into the LMS or ALSG platform at least 2 weeks in advance of the course to ensure it works. If your login has not worked, you have probably entered the wrong email or forgotten your password.
