Advanced Development Programme (ADP)

The Advanced Development Programme (ADP) was part of the Co-Creating Health initiative which started in 2008, and after a period of review in 2025, the programme continues with updated content and mode of delivery.

Supported self-management is working with people with long-term condition(s) to ensure they are as engaged with their own healthcare as much as possible.  It also aims, through patient programmes, to equip them with the skills and confidence to manage their condition effectively

The aim of ADP is to give healthcare professionals an opportunity to enhance and develop their knowledge and skills in supporting patients with long-term conditions to self-manage. With this person-centred approach, the health professional benefits from learning about self-management approaches and gains:

• The skills to have more productive consultations and have difficult conversations in an effective and collaborative way
•  Increased confidence in supporting patients to self-manage
• Tips and techniques for collaborative working and successful care planning
• Greater job satisfaction

The Advanced Development Programme (ADP) is a free training programme for health professionals who see people with long-term health condition residing in or have a GP in Haringey or Islington.

As well as giving you the tools to help patients manage their own conditions the course is a very clever mix of consultation skills and dealing with difficult consultations. I changed the start of my consultation from “What can I do for you today?” to “what are we doing today?......what else were you thinking of talking about” …i.e. using language that immediately shifts the responsibility from me taking over all of it to a more partnership approach of setting the agenda for the consultation together. I have been on a variety of consultation skills courses in the past. The difference between this and other consultation skills training is that it really does address the balance of responsibility and offers practical ways of engaging patients actively in their own care.
